Description: The Burdekin plum (Pleiogynium timorense) is a native Australian rainforest tree known for its large, dark purple fruits and long cultural history as a bush tucker food. Found mainly along the east coast of Queensland, it can grow up to 20 metres tall and is surprisingly hardy, tolerating drought and coastal conditions despite its rainforest origins. The fruit is famously very hard and sour straight off the tree, but after ripening—traditionally by being buried in sand—it softens into a tart, plum-like flavour that can be eaten fresh or used in jams, sauces, and even wine. Rich in antioxidants and vitamin C, the Burdekin plum has gained renewed interest in recent years as a nutritious native food, with levels of antioxidants reported to be significantly higher than blueberries. Once widely used by Indigenous Australians and early settlers, it is now making a comeback in modern Australian cuisine and native food cultivation.
