Description: Hygroryza aristata, commonly called floating bamboo or floating bamboo grass, is a true aquatic grass that forms dense, spreading mats across still or slow-moving freshwater. Native to tropical Asia and northern Australia, it floats by means of buoyant, spongy stems (stolons) that creep across the water surface, rooting at nodes as they expand. Its narrow, bamboo-like leaves stand upright above the water, giving the appearance of miniature floating bamboo. In ponds and wetlands, it provides valuable habitat for fish fry and aquatic invertebrates, helps shade water to suppress algae, and absorbs excess nutrients. Because it spreads quickly in warm conditions, it’s best suited to larger ponds or controlled water bodies where its growth can be managed.
