Description: Coleus forsskohlii (Indian Coleus / Plectranthus barbatus) is a hardy, aromatic perennial herb valued for both its ornamental appeal and medicinal significance. Native to India and parts of tropical Africa, it grows as a bushy plant with soft, fleshy stems and attractive green to purplish foliage, producing spikes of pale blue to purple flowers. It thrives in warm climates with well-drained soil and partial to full sun, and is easily propagated from cuttings. Best known as the natural source of forskolin, a compound traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine, the plant is also useful in permaculture systems as a low-maintenance groundcover or herbaceous layer species, attracting pollinators, suppressing weeds, and contributing biomass while tolerating heat and moderate drought.
