Description: Pandanus tectorius is a tropical coastal plant widely grown across northern Australia and the Indo-Pacific, easily recognised by its spiralling leaves, stilt-like aerial roots, and large segmented fruit. Traditionally used by Indigenous and Pacific Island communities, its leaves are harvested for weaving mats, baskets, and roofing, while also being valued in cooking for their fragrant, vanilla-like aroma in both sweet and savoury dishes. The fruit is edible when processed, and various parts of the plant have been used in traditional medicine. In a permaculture system, pandanus is highly useful for coastal resilience—tolerating salt spray, wind, and poor sandy soils—making it ideal for erosion control, windbreaks, and multifunctional planting where it provides food, fibre, and structural diversity.
