Native to Asia and widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions (including northern Australia), it thrives in shallow water or saturated mud, sending up smooth, upright, leafless green stems that resemble fine rushes. Unlike floating species, it is rooted firmly in the substrate and prefers warm conditions with consistent water levels during the growing season. In pond or wetland design, it works well in the shallow margins, nutrient-rich bog zones, or constructed wetlands, where it helps with filtration while also producing an edible harvest.
